3 Signs Your Digestive System Needs Water Lentils

Our digestive system is designed to absorb and assimilate vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fats. When it is not working properly we can miss out on important components used for energy production, cognitive function, detoxification, and cellular renewal. The following are three signs you may experience if something is off.

1. Bloating and belching after meals

Contrary to popular belief, it is not normal to bloat after eating. Bloat is the byproduct of gas building up in the intestines. This can be due to an imbalance in the microbiome. Our microbiome is a 7-pound collection of yeast and bacteria that take up residence in the large intestine. They are responsible for producing immune cells, neurotransmitters, and turning or genes on and off! The composition of species present is completely individual, similar to a fingerprint. However, this composition can change overtime depending on diet and lifestyle. When these bacteria become out of balance, they are more likely to produce gas when we eat. Additionally, these bacteria can become displaced and migrate into the small intestine. When this happens, the gas will build up in the lower belly, creating visible and painful bloating. This is called SIBO and it is important to have a certified nutritionist or medical doctor assess your symptoms. Regular dysbiosis in the large intestine can be experienced after a round of antibiotics, consuming a diet high in sugars and refined carbohydrates, or even drinking alcohol. Returning to a diet full of fresh vegetables, low sugar fruits, and fermented foods can help bring the biome back into balance. Belching after meals can also be due to the build-up of gas in the small intestine or stomach. At your next meal, take note of how many times you chew each bite. We should aim for 20-30 chews or a liquid consistency. If we don’t chew enough the stomach may have a hard time breaking it down, allowing the food to sit longer and leave more opportunity for gas production.

2. Feeling tired after eating

Food should energize us and if it leaves you feeling tired we should take a deeper look. Eggs, fish, turkey, and spinach all contain higher levels of tryptophan, which is the precursor to serotonin. Serotonin is responsible for our sleep cycles and a surge could leave you feeling drowsy. But in most cases feeling sleepy after eating is connected to our blood sugar. When we have meals that are high in refined carbohydrates and sugar our blood sugar will rise quickly and crash just the same. Symptoms of a crash are fatigue, irritability, sugar cravings, and shaking. The best way to avoid wacky blood sugar is to balance your meals. Make sure you have a source of fiber, quality protein, and healthy fat each time you eat. This could look like an avocado or a salad with almonds and wild caught salmon.

3. Feeling full after a few bites

There is nothing worse than sitting down for a great meal and feeling completely stuffed after a few bites. It doesn’t make sense and can cause us to overeat because we feel that we need to finish our plates. However, this can be a sign that there is not enough stomach acid present to breakdown the food consumed. Coupled with not chewing enough this is a recipe for bloating, cramping, and growth of bacteria in the stomach. We forget the first step of digestion is our nose. When we smell food, our stomach begins preparing. When eating grab and go meals, we lose out on this first step. Take the time to prepare and sit down for meals. This allows stomach acid to be produced and do its work on the food its given.
